Jailed since January, rapper Kodak Black, 20, will remain behind bars until September.

That was the result of a plea deal struck by the Pompano Beach-raised hip-hop star on Tuesday, said his lawyer, Bradford Cohen.

It could’ve been worse.

Initially facing a half-dozen charges after his January arrest, Black, whose given name is Dieuson Octave, has seen most of those counts dropped. On Tuesday, the remaining two counts, possession of ammunition and a marijuana charge, were also dropped, Cohen said.

“I think that he’s really focusing on what he needs to do in the future,” Cohen said, adding that he sees Octave about three times a week.

“He’s also been working really hard to get his GED,” Cohen said.

The January arrest was sparked by an Instagram video that deputies said showed a group of people at the rapper’s house smoking marijuana near a child, with one of the guests allegedly playing recklessly with a handgun.

After the bulk of those charges, which included a child neglect allegation, were dropped, only the relatively minor allegations of associating with people associated with criminal activity and driving with a suspended license remained, Cohen said.

How Kodak Black made it big — and could lose it all
Because Black was already on house arrest and probation from another case involving involving robbery and false imprisonment charges, those charges carry more weight, and as a result he was sentenced to another five months in jail.

Broward Sheriff’s jail booking records show September 17 as his expected release date.

But part of the deal is that when Black leaves jail in the fall, he also won’t be on house arrest or probation any longer. Since August 2016, Black has been in and out of jail several times, but even when he’s been out he’s been on probation and house arrest.
